PADI Open Water Diver

Regular $379         Save $80, Limited Time Only $299 (Standard Book/DVD)

Plunge into the ocean and see the world like never before when you become an Open Water Diver. Once you’re certified, you and your dive buddy can jump in anywhere, anytime. Being a diver will get you closer to sea turtles, giant corals, and sunken treasure than ever before. What are you waiting for?

Our Open Water Diver course is a two-weekend program that will teach you the basics of scuba diving and earn you the first level of certification. The course is broken down into three sections, knowledge development, pool training, and open water checkout dives. Your class starts on a Friday evening for orientation (6 pm - 9 pm), followed by classes and pool sessions on Saturday and Sunday (9 am - 4 pm both days). The second weekend we will head out to a local lake for your open water checkout dives. Once you’ve completed both weekends, all you need to do is come into the shop, sign your paperwork, and get your picture taken. Now you’re certified!

Read below to get the answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions.

1). What does the $379 course cost include?
The cost of the course includes all instruction, training materials (PADI Open Water Crew Pak and Open Water DVD), and the certification processing fees.

2). What is NOT included?
The cost of the course does not include your personal gear (mask, snorkel, boots, and fins), rental scuba gear*, and any dive park fees. *See #5 to find out how to get the $75 rental gear fee waived

3). Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes, you do. You must be able complete a continuous 200 yard swim (any stroke) and float/tread water for 10 minutes.

4). What is the minimum age for certification?
The minimum age for PADI Open Water Diver certification is 10 years old. Due to lower student ratios for 10 and 11 year old students, we limit our group classes to divers 12 years old and above. Private lessons are available for younger students. Please contact the shop for information on private lessons.

5). Where do I purchase my personal gear?
You can purchase all of your personal gear from Island Divers! We carry all the top brands and have a wide variety of styles, colors, and price ranges to find the perfect fit for every diver. Other great benefits of purchasing with us include:
• 10% off all equipment purchased while enrolled
• Professional fitting by our awesome shop staff
• 100% price match guarantee
• Easy exchange for anything that isn’t working after your pool sessions
No $75 rental fee for the open water weekend!

6). How far in advance should I book?
For enjoyment and safety, our classes are limited to 8 students. Due to the small size, course dates fill up FAST, especially in the summertime. We recommend booking far in advance (2 weeks to 1 month) to guarantee admission to your preferred date. If we are full on the date you want, we can find an alternate date that works for you and put you on the waitlist for your first choice. If you need to get certified faster, call us! We may have last minute spots available or the option for private lessons on your schedule.

7). What do I need to do to prepare for my class?
Once you book your class you will need to stop by the shop and pick up your training materials (one PADI Crew Pak per student and one DVD per group) and fill out some paperwork. You will need to watch the DVD, read all five chapters in the book, and fully complete all five knowledge reviews prior to the first night of class. If your knowledge reviews are not completed on the first night of class, you will be automatically rescheduled to the next available class and charged a $50 transfer fee.

8). What happens if I can’t make it to my class and need to reschedule?
Because of the limited number of spots available in our classes we have a strict cancellation/reschedule policy. You can reschedule anytime up to 7 days prior to your start date free of charge. If you need to reschedule within 7 days of your start date or don’t show up for your class, you will be charged a $50 transfer fee before you can reschedule.

9). Tell me more about those open water dives…
Your Open Water Checkout Dives are the final step in your certification journey. You will take your classroom knowledge and the skills you practiced in the pool and apply them to an open water environment. It’s a great weekend of bubble blowing, camaraderie, and fun!
From April to October, we visit Clear Springs Scuba Park in Terrell. Your instructor will meet you at 8am and diving will be finished around 3pm both Saturday and Sunday. Entry into Clear Springs is $20/diver per day and $10/non-diver per day. Hotel rooms are available in Terrell for the weekend or camping is permitted at the lake for $10/night per person (Hookups for RVs are available too!)
From November through March, we travel to San Marcos every six weeks to dive in Spring Lake. The water temperature is a constant 70 degrees providing an exceptionally comfortable dive experience, even when it’s cold outside! Contact the store to discuss dates, times, and prices for these trips.

10). What do I do if I’m leaving on a trip don’t have time to do both weekends?
If you aren’t able to complete both weekends, no worries! The PADI Open Water Referral Program is designed to help you finish your certification anywhere under the sun. You will complete the knowledge development and pool sessions here then head to your destination to finish up your open water checkout dives. For more info on the referral class, pricing, and other options, please contact the shop.
